There is no rift between rookies and senior officers as a rule. Everyone is working together for the same common goal.

As a training officer I can tell you that one thing senior officers hate is when a rookie thinks they already know everything and won't listen to what the seniors have to say. I hate trying to train a rookie in something only be told that they already know how to do it. Of course they then proceed to totally screw it up.

I also remember when I was a rookie I thought some of the veterans didn't give their all all of the time. Now I understand that not everything is go, go, go. You have to set a pace or you go crazy.

I can also say that if you are a rookie and you get a nickname it means that we like you and you should be proud of that nickname.........whatever it is that we pick.

Yes and no. Some older officers think the rookies are full of "piss and vinegar", while some rookies think some older officers are lazy etc

That said, I know some lazy rookies and hardcore vets.

1.) Not generally.

2.) Older officers dislike it when (some) new officers expect things to be handed to them on a silver platter. Promotions and special assignments are things that need to be earned with time and performance, not automatically given because of how well someone performed in the Academy, or whatever criteria the newbie feels should apply.

2.) (b). New officers often dislike it when (some) veteran officers are burned out and cynical about the job. They often feel that the older officers are just lazy and unmotivated.

I agree with Citicop...

There are times when the young "rookies" feel like they will solve all the crime overnight in the zeal to do a good job!

The "new guys" work hard but are still at a learning stage within the profession and this is where the "older" guys and supervisors provide leadership and direction!

Senior policemen should help the rookies about their job.
