Your statement is very confusing... Perhaps some punctuation to help it out? Are you saying that if the mormons had stopped polygamy then the attacks would have ended? Or are you saying that Mormonism would have ended without polygamy?
It is true that because of the persecutions, many Mormon men were killed, and their children and wives would have starved to death, and would have been forced to make a lliving in a country where only the men had legal rights to property and authority. Polygamy saved the lives of many of those women and children.

A reading of the Bible shows that polygamy was practiced a lot. Even God's prophets practiced it, aka Abraham. So, it is not exclusive of the LDS (Mormon) faith.
Joseph Smith received revelation about it after 1830. It was a hard doctrine to accept. Brigham Young said that he would have rather died than to have had to accept the doctrine.
I suppose (my opinion) that the doctrine was practiced because more women were joining the LDS church in those early years than men, and therefore to ensure that those women had spouses and a means of support, polygamy was practiced.
Now that such is not the case, polygamy is no longer practiced in the Mormon church and those that do are ex-communicated from the church.

Well, I think it is similar to how polygamy was allowed at various times in the Bible.
And I agree, there were some pragmatic reasons for the practice. Critics tend to focus on the polygamy and not on the underlying cause, which was the brutal persecution the members of the church received at the hands of mobs here in the "land of the free". I've always wondered why that is...

I don't think this theory is factually correct. While Mormons were threatened repeatedly in the 19th century, and thousands did die in those persecutions and the subsequent forced exodus to the Salt Lake Valley, I don't think their numbers ever dwindled so low that they were threatened with extinction.

The reason for polygamy in any society is to make the group larger from within and thereby less need of converting non-believers
