Women are to cover their head/hair for obedience and also so men won't be distracted by the beauty of women. God created woman so lovely that it is a necessity to hide or "veil" the hair, which in antiquity was a sign of great beauty, as it is also today (but not as much). Women should veil themselves in respect for God, so that the men at Mass will not pay attention to women but give God His rightful attention.
I applaud all women who veil themselves at Mass. This was the norm for almost 2000 years in Christianity. It wasn't until the spirit of modernism and the women's lib movement that this practice/discipline began to cease. As human beings, we must humble ourselves from time to time. And for a woman to veil herself in the prescence of Almighty God at the Holy Mass is indeed humbling, but also VERY necessary.

Personally, I've never seen the point in covering my hair, unless it is to protect me from bad weather. I do understand that some religious do, however. At least you do it with a bit of class. I love wearing a snood myself...
I don't think pulling the hair back into a pony-tail is the same as covering, but I do wear it that way to keep it out of my face when I'm working...
EDIT:
Sure, a woman's hair can be very sensuous...and so can a man's.
Did you know that some men find a nun's habit to be a very attractive dress?
I wonder if it ever occurred to anyone that overdoing the cover-up thing to avoid turning a guy on could have the opposite effect...you arouse his curiosity, and he gets turned on wanting to see what you might be hiding...

I cover my hair for religious reasons as a Muslima, I feel that it is in obedience to Islamic Scripture (although there are various opinions on the subject). While living in Saudi Arabia I also wore the face veil -for various personal reasons, not by force.
When in the States people do give me strange looks and more recently I've gotten a few threats. But, all in all, I do it out of obedience and submission to God and look forward to be rewarded for my patience.
Peace be with you too -Salam.

I cover my hair in obedience to scripture, and my husband, and because it follows Holy Tradition of the Orthodox Church. I usually wear coverings from Garlandsofgrace hair coverings online. I love them, great quality and good prices.

I do not cover my head, as in Judaism, it is married women who cover their head........even in the Orthodoxy. I bet you look good in a snood. There are some really beautiful ones, with beads, woven laces, etc.,. They are ideal for someone with long hair.
Adriana------the hair is suppose to be a sensuous part of a woman, and she covers it so a man will not see it.

I do not cover my hair but I know many women who do. I understand it is done for modesty. There is nothing wrong with covering your hair for any reason as long as it is your choice and freely done.
Pardon my ignorance, what is a snood?

i dont cover my hair as i think the hair of a woman is her NATURAL beauty and there is no reason to hide it. then if a woman cuts her hair like a mans or is bald then there would probably be need for a veil in my opinion. but everyone has their own idea of what modesty is. so its ok for me as long as women do it on their own choice and if it makes them feel secure or modest.

the abrahamic religions: judaism, christianity and islam, are very masculine, violent religions. these religions require that women deny their own womenhood, as the finer aspects of womenhood: moderate temperament, serenity, and cooperation, are incompatible with the violent message of the abrahamic creeds
therefore, women in these religions must hide and deny their feminine selves, and only males must be visible in society. if woemn became more powerful in muslim/ christian/ jewish society, they might make the religions less violent, which would make the religions less able to spread like the viruses they are

i don't cover my hair, but i've always wondered why people do. I understand that it's for respect, but is there something disrespectful in showing your hair?
