You need to authorize your computer to work correctly with devices. Click on Store tab, click Authorize computer, and follow the prompts. After you do this you should go into the Preferences, via Edit--Preferences, click on the Sync tab and setup your sync preferences, whether or not you wish to create a backup of your devices contents, whether or not you want to sync as soon as you hook up the device, etc.

If this doesn't work, try running diagnostics. Click Help--Run diagnostics and see if it corrects the issue.

If you still have issues with this, remove the current iTunes program and download and install a new instance of the program. Often programs become corrupt, and if even one file is corrupt, the program will fail in many areas to function as it should. The first step to correcting such errors is removal and reinstallation of the affected program. If iTunes allows, you can attempt a Repair instead via Add/Remove applet in Control Panel.

Good luck and I hope you get your issue solved soon. Have a nice day.
