What are your religious/spiritual beliefs towards "owning" pets?

'woof woof'

I think that owning pets is a responsibility, and if I am going to accept love and caring from an animal, I have a moral obligation to return food and shelter.

I think that it depends on the type of pet. Some pet/owner relationships are more mutually beneficial to the animal and the human. For example a domesticated dog is likely much happier than a tank animal like a snake, lizard, fish, etc...

If the animal is happy in the relationship then I have no problem with it.

Aw man, don't give anyone any ideas! Next thing you know someone will decide it's a sin, and then breeders everywhere will start refusing to sell their stock to people they view as iffy or against their religion or whatever.

To answer the actual question, I don't have either. I do think having a pet can keep people calm/reduce stress but I don't see anything particularly religious or spiritual about it.

As to whether or not we "own" them, if that was the emphasis of your question, I dunno. I think it's semantics. Do we own them, do they own us, are we not owners but merely guardians.....whatever. It's just semantics.

I don't "own" my pets except in a legal sense. To me they are other living things which partake of the Divinity inherent all of nature, and I have undertaken the responsibility of caring for them in a largely human world. I value them as representatives of the natural world in the man-made city; they put me in touch with the animal aspect of nature on a daily basis.

I'd like to say that I view my pets as members of my family, but its more likely true that my pets own me.

Hmm. That could be slightly ambiguous use of the word owning, I suspect. Do you own many animals?

If I "own" my pets why am I feeding them, cleaning their litter box, taking them to the vet, buying them toys, etc, etc, etc ?

Seems the other way around if you ask me
