Sure, smart move, if you get the HD-DVD addon drive.HDMI is needed for full 1080p video so be sure to buy an Elite.
Also, plan to get a PS3 in the future. When you are done, you will have two great gaming machines and the ability to watch both HD-DVD and Bluray.
Some movie studios are only making high definition disks in one format or the other. By owning both game machines, you will be able to watch any high definition movie, regardless of which format it is.

I think that due to the fact of the rpice I would really consider getting a cheaper alternative. Check out your local WAL-MART or ASDA depending on what side of the Atlantic you are on. They sell cheap enough DVD Players.
If you are going to use it for the gaming as well, i would recommend the PS£, people say it doesn't have a good catalouge, but just look at www.play.com to see the full years up and coming games and that's not even half of them as I'm sure lots of third party developers will throw a few suprises in along the way as they normally do.
So, a 360 would be an OK replacement if you were using it for BOTH dvds and gaming but if not, a staand-alone dvd player.
i recommend the PS£ mostly though as i need gaming friends and you seem cool lmao :)
Happy New Year :P
