To believers such as I,
Joseph Smith was a Prophet call by God to restore Jesus Christ's Church upon this Earth.
He translated words of God from ancient gold plate, and brought about the Book of Mormon, which stands as another witness, along with the Bible, to the truth of Jesus Christ.
He organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1830, later he was murdered by mobs when he was falsely accuse of crimes he did not commit.

I know it doesn't make any sense. Basically Joseph Smith was a con artist who was very lucky to get away with a poorly conceived con. The result is the LDS church.
I don't mean to pick on Mormonism though. I firmly believe that if we knew as much about the origins of other religions as we do about the Mormons, that the other religions would be just as hard to believe. The LDS church just has the misfortune of having come into existence long after many other religions, so we have more complete historical knowledge about its founding.

I know that when I went to the web site of the Mormon church, half of what they had written there didn't make any sense, incomplete thoughts, sentence's that are out of context, continually knocking Christians and the Bible. Comparing themselves to Christians in order to prove themselves. As far as Joseph Smith you can read about him by just typing in his name into your browser. He was a kid that wrote about fantasy stories. His parents were a little odd also. go read it.
P.S. Yes the crimes he was committing were spreading a (false Gospel), the people knew it back then just as the true believers know it today.

I know that Smith borrowed a lot of his ritual from Freemasons, and that there is no even less evidence for Mormonism than there is for other religions.

Well, 2 of my FAVORITE pieces of info are these:
1. He says he found some metal tablets with gods laws on them (sound familiar at all?), but that they were mysteriously (and conveniently) 'lost' before he could show them to anyone.
2. He told his wife that an angel told HIM to marry some more women. He then told her that he really didn't WANT to marry these other young, beautiful women, but that the angel INSISTED that he do so, but that he was REALLY upset about it. The only thing that is TRULY unbelievable about this story is that SHE BOUGHT IT!

Joseph Smith was a conman, what he tried to pass off doesn't wash and was full of holes. Like anyone else who claims to have spoken to God.
