Janet and Binky's Cat food chart

Please check the catinfo link and see if you are feeding the best food for her. Best does not mean most expensive although many will argue with me but Fancy Feast, Friskies etc that are NO gravy and high protein and low carb are better than the most expensive food from the vets or the cheapest or most expensive food that is dry. Avoid dry totally. The article will explain why. Also to anyone who says that dry cleans their teeth look at cat barf it is mostly whole bits of dry food. They swallow whole. pieces. If you eat a large pretzel stick or a piece of dry cat food does it clean your teeth??
You have a jaw made for chewing too so if it would clean a cats teeth who doesn't have the chewing motion it should have yours clean. See it is a fable made up by dry food companies.

I thought that olive oil was good for their fur but I read it has something in it that can injure kidneys so go with sunflower oil or omega 3 in the food. (Mine will not eat a bowl of mashed up wet food with any oil in it!! I am now working on her eating real butter this is for her stools not her fur. Since changing to the wet canned only her dandruf is gone. I have never bathed any cat in my life. I feel it drys out their skin more and if they are well they clean themselves. I have never had a stinky dirty cat either.
It is best if you can find food - canned that has no grains in for the first 5 at least. Check the lists I gave you and good luck. write me in a few weeks and tell me how great your girl is looking on her new diet.

Okay as well as adding alittle fish oil, olive oil...or evena a tiny bit of butter to the cat's food you can try a good degreasing bath. Sometimes a dark colored animal with oily skin scratches and it flakes like dandruff all over. It seems like t would be more drying and it sound extreme but it's not if you it once every month or every other month. take your run of the mill degreasing dish washing liwuids like Joy or Palmolive and wash the cats entire body. Really scrub down to their skin. If you have finger nails use them to really lather the cat up. Then rinse like there is no tommorrow. make sure you get every trace of the soap out. you can then follow with a nice massage of Pantene conditioner or something VERY moisturizing. It doesn't have to be for pets...just make sure it doesn't gret in the cat's eyes. Then dry and groom as usual. I have shown and raised cats of all ilks, i have worked with diverse coats....and this is basic but REALLY helps. Don't break the bank with medicated shampoos until you have tried this....it's just not worth it.

Get a humidifier for your home. You can get a large one that will humidify most of your house, or get a smaller one to use in the room where your cat spends most of its time.

If you're feeding just dry food, start offering some canned food as well. The extra hydration will help - this alone cured Poppy's dandruff.

Start adding some fish oil to your cat's food.

Brush the cat regularly.

Sounds to me like this cat needs to see the vet. Shedding a lot of skin is not normal for a healthy cat. She needs a well-kitty visit, like little kids get well-child visits, to be looked over and to have her dandruff seen by somebody who knows what might be causing it.

My cat has dry skin too. I give her either omega- 3 fatty acid pills from the vet or 1/2 a can of tuna every day or two and it works pretty good because of the omega -3 and it is low in calories, so the cat won't get fat.The omega-3 helps not just the skin, but to keep the cat from over shedding and it's fur nice, bright and soft. Sardines can do the same too.

Don't worry, it is a lack of a specific vitamin or fatty acid. Add a spoonfull of pure olive oil in her food every day, or buy Glavaderm pet vitamins and add a few drops of that in the food.

Does she have any round bald patches? If so, she may have ringworm. But if the dandruff is all over and she has no bald areas, just add the olive oil or Glavaderm.

A lot of cats have dandruff. They have special foods that norish their skin and coat. If it's really bad then it would'nt be a bad idea to take her to to the vet.

Coconut oil is safe and great for cats. You can rub it all over their skin and fur, you can add a bit to their food if they'll tolerate it, and you can put a drop in their ears to eliminate ear mites. Also great help for fleas. You can rub it all over them, especially after a bath, and dip the flea comb in it. My cat doesn't seem to love being all oily, but it's a much better solution than having a vet prescribe anything unnecessary that's chemical-laden, and provides relief from the itchiness of flea. Of course, if the symptoms don't go away, seek your vet.

You could add some sort of oil into her food, which will condition her fur, and make her dandruff not so bad. Also wash her with conditioning shampoo. If you cannot wash her, you can also try to brush her, to keep her clean.
