They don't say NY, NY because the post office of the United States is antiquated.

Brooklyn USED to be a separate city over 100 years ago, but the post office never caught up. Queens used to be made up of several small towns - Corona was one - but again, the post office never caught up.

This is true in other places too. I grew up in a town in New Jersey that the post office didn't recognize as a town - again, they never caught up. So everyone in the small town I grew up in had a mailing address in one of several other towns ajoining ours. The U.S. Postal Service didn't feel the need to change!!!

But, believe me, Brooklyn and all the neighborhoods of Queens ARE in New York City, despite the odd mailing addresses. We all vote for the Mayor of New York. Our kids all go to the New York City Public Schools, run by the New York City Department of Education. I WORK for the New York Department of Education and my paychecks all say "City of New York" on them.

The other oddity that is a throwback to when Brooklyn and Queens were separate is that there is a separate public library system for Brooklyn and one for Queens. But the Bronx and Staten Island and Manhattan are all in the New York City Public Library system. Why? Well, Brooklyn and Queens already had a big beauracracy in their public library system when they became part of NYC in 1898, and they didn't want to give it up.

But the political designation is what is important. Brooklyn and Queens are politically part of NYC, and not politically separate - we we've got a paper to prove it!!! LOL! The U.S. Postal Service doesn't get to decide this!

My husband just reminded me that there is another good reason why the postal service did not want to change the addresses to NY, NY when Brooklyn became part of NYC. Some addresses would be exactly the same in two different places. For example, there is a 7th Ave in Brooklyn and a different 7th Avenue in NYC. So 159 7th Avenue Brooklyn, NY is different from 159 7th Avenue NY, NY. If Brooklyn used NY, NY on our addresses there would be a LOT of confusion.

To start off, Corona is a section of Queens, NY. The reason you have to write Corona, NY on you letter is because due to the complex layout of the Borough of Queens, the Post Office sorts the letter by the section of the borough. Each section has its own zip code.

In Brooklyn, the whole borough shares the first 3 numbers of the zip code (112), so any letter going to Brooklyn will get to there final destination regardless.

A little known fact. Brooklyn, was once a city, independent to New York City. In 1898, the city fathers, decided to merge the borough, along with Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx, with Manhattan to create the Greater City of New York. Also, Corona was originally a town long before it became part of New York City.

Hope this was helpful.

There are some ideosyncracies with NYC addresses. Generally, though, anything in Manhattan will go to a New York, NY + zip code.

Any address in Brooklyn will have "Brooklyn, NY" + zip code.

Any address in Bronx is Bronx, NY.

Any address in Staten Island is Staten Island, NY.

Queens is a bit different - they were independent villages before integrating into Queens County and then part of the 5 boroughs (counties) of New York City. Hence an address in Queens will go to an individual town or district such as Flushing, Corona, Jamaica, Forest Hills, Rego Park, Long Island City, Elmhurst, Fresh Meadows, etc.

Brooklyn is a burrough of the City of New york and Corona is part of the burrough of Queens new york, so yes both are in New york state and listing them as Brooklyn, NY with the correct zip code is correct. Just be careful to use the correct zip code because both have multiple zip codes.

Your aunt is right; she does live in nyc. NYC is made up of 5 boros: the bronx, brooklyn, manhattan, queens and staten island. Queens is the only boro that lists the section as the city and the name "queens" itself. Corona is a section in queens.

We are NYers and are from the city of new york.

PRIOR to incorporation in 1898. most of the towns and villages in queens, brooklyn, and bronx were independent with their own government. the towns and villages inside brooklyn county was much more unified than those in queens county. when incorporation came in 1898, all the towns in brooklyn county were unified, and ready to join with new york city; whereas queens county was split in votes.

the 5 towns of Queens county (flushing, hempstead, jamaica, newtown, and oyster bay) split up with flushing, jamaica, and newtown voting to join nyc, and oyster bay and hempstead staying put on long island.

mail delivery mirrors what the county does.

Doesn't matter what you put down, if you have a zip code the post office uses that info.
