I'm a Junior in hs in the usa. White if that matters. I'll just get to the point. I have tourettes and bipolar disorder (co disorders) and im gay. How will those effect teaching english in China?I'm thinking I will go to college here and get a BS in computer science or business and then go to china and be a private tutor and maybe work reelance with my degree through the computer. idk. How about finding a job in China. Being white and native English speaker would it be hard to find a job? Would I need to know Chinese? I do want to learn but I dont want a job that depends on my Chinese fluency. I am very interested in traveling around just teaching english and doing free lance wok online (maybe) if I like it. I def want to get out of the usa and explore and maybe build a life somewhere. Would it be hard to find a gay guy in China or are there online dating sites, gay club and stuf like there is here? Thanks in advance!

I would avoid Dave's ESL, they're not a very sensitive bunch. Here's a better ESL Cafe for you, http://ESLTeacherCafe.com
or call the people at Journeyeast.org, they can give you some really good advice about teaching in China and you get to speak to an actual person.
I believe the only challange you face is passing the medical requirement for obtaining the working visa. If you pass that and you are a law abiding person, there is no reason why you should not be able to work abroad.

hi , i live in Hong Kong, China.
since i've been living and working here for 8 years, i can tell you that i gets extremely irritating but only among the uncivilized Chinese. They do disgusting things in public, like, pick their nose ,look at their boogers and play with it, OR Clean their ears in public, look at the ear wax stuck in their nails, ugh. and omg, not to forget, they talk SOOOOO loud on the PHONE. seriously...u'll know what i mean when you come here.
Other the these, they're polite and helpfull people. Hong Kong, is THE BEST place to live in the world except the pollution level. IT's the CITY of LIGHTS, it's never nighttime in HK, it's bright, ligh decoration every where, on the bridges on buildings and roads e.t.c. and HONG KONG is the business hub. You can get, buy , sell everything here.
ok let's get to your point.
As you can see, CHINA is becoming the LEADING country in the world and Chinese are concerned about teaching their youngsters English/ learning themselves. So i think it'll be very nice here and there you will get a lot of priority and priviledges since you're a white. I don't know why they have this thing about westerners. And for you to learn Chinese, hmm, it will be VERY usefull if you know, and yes if you are going to live in hong kong then you must know it but i don't know much Chinese but there are a lot of western companies as well and even chinese companies hire a lot of non-chinese speakers .. there are many institutes that teach Chinese here. So it won't be hard for you. And did you know, there are like SOOOOO many westerners here that know Chinese so fluently. so if you are really intersted it'll be easy for you.
Renting house is Cheap, for one person around HKD1000 , food is extremely Cheap, a whole set of MC Donalds is just around HKD 20 , everything's pretty cheap and living is good very convinient.
BeST OF luck

A little advice from me. Don't go the easy way. My sis in law own 4 tuition centers in Taipei. She does check on certificates provided by applicants so do not go for the Fake Degree. It just happened last week, an applicant submitted a fake degree and he is on the run now. The government department of education in both countries are now seriously looking into this teaching work visa, because so many of them are bogus . Recent news, teaching in shanghai ,you need to have at least a Diploma Certificate and rules here are pretty strict for now. There are some lucky ones who got thru with fake degree but got in to trouble when they went for a renewal and are banned forever. I am staying in shanghai now . It's really not as bad as people have described. I have a few friends from US and UK who are teachers and loving it here. Happy Relocating.
