My peripheral neuropathy (NP) started after one of several surgeries to my left leg/hip. In 2006 I had 4 surgeries to that leg bringing the total to 7. (If you want to read my story, go to the "About me" page of my website: www.creativecanes.com. It's quite horendous.)

Some where along the line, when I was transferred on and off the OR table, or back to bed, or something, one of the discs in my back had become fragmented. The fragments are now pressing on nerves and are apparently the cause of my NP.

Right now I'm on Gabitril twice a day. It has help, but not totally gotten rid of the stabbing and burning pain. I have read various accounts of NP lasting for the rest of a person's life. I'm not thrilled either.

How has it affected my daily life? To start, my feet always burn. I find I have to wear only clogs so that if the intensity of the heat becomes unbarable, I can quickly take my feet out of the shoes and stand or sit with my bare feet on a cold surface. Very annoying. I don't like to wear socks for that reason either. Not wearing socks in Wisconsin is a challenge!

Also, I find that even when I go to bed with what seems like cold feet, they heat up if there are too many blankets. That burning, consequently, wakes me up! That is also very annoying. The Gabitril has decreased some of that.

But what I really hate are the stabbing pain attacks I get a couple of times a day. It's like someone repeatedly stabbing my foot with a red hot ice pick. Sometimes I cannot prevent myself from saying, "OW!" aloud. I then have to explain to people, who I was just smiling to, that the "ice pick gremlins" got me again...blah, blah, blah.

It's a challenge when nothing seems to work. I've tried a bed cradle, Lidocaine patches, gabapentin, and now Gabitril. (I think those are two different things.) What I'm supposed to do is have back surgery to get rid of those fragments. But after being in a hospital, rehab nursing home, and a hospital bed at my house for an entire year, I don't feel like more surgery. I don't like the idea of back surgery anyway.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

I have Nursed many patients over my forty years of Nursing. I have seen many approaches to treatment of Neuropathy. Neurontin still had the greatest effect on chronic Neuropathy. I have seen and participated in many newer approaches and yet found that our patients did not benefit long term from any of them. Neurontin is not without its own side effects as well. It is one ot the most painful of processes so I am hoping that you will find answers that can help. I have been retired for over a year so there may be treatments that are more helpful today. Good question and great information for all to know.

I've had 7 lower back surgeries many years ago and now I have terrible neuropathy pain in both feet!
I have an E M G scheduled in 2 months for both lower legs to see if I have nerve damage! Has anyone experienced this same condition that I have?
