it's just that I keep them offsite at a storage room and it's a hassle for me to go there and actually get them.

I have no problem with showing the IRS all proof of my deductions if I get audited.

I just don't want to go through the hassle of fussing over them to get them organized for the H&R Block tax preparer.

If I could just quote my deductions since I have a notebook containing my deduction figures, I'd rather do it that way.

So it's okay if I don't have all my receipts with me when I go to H&R Block then?

Call them and ask them before you go. Depending on their policy, they might or might not accept your records.

I don't know what policies are in affect at storefront tax preparation companies, but the general policy among tax professionals is to accept the client's word for what they claim. If you bring in a listing of your totals, that should be sufficient.

An exception to that rule of thumb will probably occur if a client makes claims which seem patently unreasonable.

Tax professionals would also keep a copy of your list in their files, both as a service to you and as a CYA measure for them.

The aggravation goes with getting the return right the first time.
