My golden retriever is about 4 years old and recently he has been extremely hyper. He won't stop jumping on people, and he won't stay put for a single second. He is always running around and never calms down. It is like this all day until he sleeps. Is it possible for me to get an obedience instructor/trainer to help make him more behaved? Will that still be able to work considering his age?

Petsmart sells some type of contraption that keeps them from Jumping. Its about 15$ and over by the clickers for training.

Yes, you can always re train ! Just be consistent, but I find it odd that he is acting up this way all of a sudden? Has there been some change ? like his diet or lack of exercise, a recent move or more visitors to the house? A routine change can alter his personality. Also want to rule out any health issues like thyroid or metabolism disorders. Also make sure he gets enough exercise, Goldens like and crave exercise. I would say at least an hour a day and he probably likes Fetch so that is a great energy burner. You can't expect him to settle down unless he is tired. Otherwise, a trainer is always a good idea.

Of course! It's really never to late.
And since it is a recent bad habit, it should be fairly easy to correct.
You should be able to correct this yourself.
In a nutshell, It sounds like your dog is asking for more excercise and attention.
And your dog thinks this is how he greets you and your freinds and ask for attention.

The most common way to correct it is to turn your back as soon as you notice the dog is going to jump. You can say no, down or command him to sit.

It's important to not give the dog attention when he jumps. Sometimes people tend to pet the dog when he leaps up on there leg while the owner is trying to tell him no, down. Wrong thing to do,that is just sending mixed messages and will confuse the dog.
You must tell your friends you are training the dog and to ignore him ( turn there back to him) While you get him in a calm state and sitting.
Good luck!

Dogs can learn at any age. Teaching them is easy, the difficulty is changing their habits. Last year I gave away a 9 year old retired racing sled dog to a disabled man who trained her to be a service dog. Now she goes to the end of the driveway to get the morning paper, brings him the phone when it rings and several other little tasks. If she could learn a new career your dog should be able to learn basic obedience.

Yes, absolutely possible. Yes, taking him to obedience school is a great idea.

Since you mention that he recently has been hyper I'm wondering what has changed in his life? Food? Exercise?

Giving him more exercise (game of fetch, go for a long walk/run) probably would help a bit also.

Yes, old dogs can learn new tricks- it's never too late.

It sounds like your dog is not getting enough exercise. You need to take him on 3 to 4 walks a day (each being 20 minutes at the least). He has too much built-up energy and the regular exercise will help him calm down.
Obedience classes will do some good, also. Ask your vet for a reference and even places like PetSmart has them.

Yes, in fact it's easier to train an older dog than a puppy because they have the ability to concentrate. Puppies have short attention spans like little kids.

4 isn't old either - The sooner you start the better!

Older dogs can learn new things, it just takes them longer. Puppies can learn to sit sometimes with a few tries, but if you are teaching an older dog it may take a few weeks. And, yes you can find a trainer that will help you teach an older dog. That's their job!

Four isn't old.

Try obedience classes at your local kennel club. If the trainer says hes too old; thats not a good trainer anyways.

Oh, certainly! I have experience with rescuing a 9 yr old siberian Husky a few years back (He has recently passed away.. and we moved on to another Sibe) and they sure can learn new tricks! He learned almost daily! Good luck!
