Read a lot of german books, watch shows in german, and keep contacts that either speak german with you or that you can call overseas and chat (or online voicechat--like a penpal if not family).
Keep doing this frequently, you will become fluent.
If all fails, live in germany for 6 months, or travel every month you can, and "forget you speak english". Always keep a dictionary with you wherever you go, and look up words when you don't know them.
Do not fall back to the english language!!! Or you will not evolve in the language efficiently.

You could buy books that are printed in German. Maybe rent or buy DVDs of German movies. Of course be careful of the PAL/NTSC compatibility problem. Take classes in high school and college. Browse the web for sites that are in Germany.

Is there a German-American club near you?

Too bad about your dad, he has a good chance to learn another language.

Read books in German, get a pen pal, watch movies with German dialogue or German subtitles (check out Netflix). You can even change this Yahoo!Answers into German. Keep incoporating your mother, and start thinking in German rather then english.

its infortunate your father behaves that way. I do understand he feels left out but he should encourage you to speak different languages. have you or your mother offered to teach him German? if you can include him in your conversations or at least teach him enough so he understands what you're saying then maybe he won't be such a jerk about it. buy books and movies in German. keep taking German classes as long as you can. travel to Germany and don't speak English at all while you're there - get a dictionary if you need it.

Try journaling in German. This will reinforce your skills without upsetting your dad. If you don't know how to say something, and can't find out another way, ask your Mutter. I'm sure she will be glad to help.

Read some newspapers/magazines on line. For example: http://www.spiegel.de/
Try to find penfriends in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. The less English they know the better. It is good discipline to try to find the right words to write to people and they can keep you up to date with the teenage scene.
