such technology for road vehicles exits for many many years, but the scale of intalling tracking devices on millions of kilometers of surface road is too massive an investment and lack of justification to collect income from this makes it non-economically viable to implement.

the difference between road vehicles & trains is the simple fact that trains ride on fixed tracks and there are also limited track as opposed to the vast distance of surface roads.

Train without drivers is simpler as trains have rails.
However. buses without drivers should be in the streets soon?

GM will be launching autopilot cars somewhere next year.

Because a computer can't stop when a person is chasing the bus.

Also, the auto pilot can't skip a stop if no one is waiting or wanting to get off.
