A growing and popular view is that Christ's resurrection was a purely spiritual one, and took place in the hearts and minds of his followers. Can people who believe this call themselves Christians?

Would you call them Christians?

Absolutely not.

See 1 Corinthians 15:12-15:

"Now if Christ is preached that He has raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and YOUR FAITH IS ALSO EMPTY."

The fact that Jesus died for our sins, and literally rose again, is fundamental to Christian belief. I wouldn't say that they can't still be called a Christian, but it's an incomplete belief. If you believe everything else in the Bible, but don't accept that the resurrected Christ walked on the earth, there's a faith disconnect. I would ask God to make His word plain to you, so that you can understand and embrace the truth.

They can call themselves whatever they want, obviously.

I'm not in the habit of checking IDs at the door to determine "real Christians" -- there are quite enough who have that self-appointed task, and perhaps some will answer here.

I will say, though, that Christ's bodily resurrection is rather central to the tenets of Christianity -- and it is not at all metaphorically discussed in Scripture, either. His disciples saw Him and touched Him; something tells me that wasn't a hologram, you know? To deny His bodily resurrection sounds a lot like heresy to these Catholic ears. But as far as calling themselves Christian ... that's their lookout.

No? The ressurection is the basis of "everything" (which did happen) without it having occured, there would be no basis for believing in the first place...no Born Again..no Holy Spirit..no anything! no Relationship with God...no hope of eternal life...no Family of God...no being "Christ Like" ..no preaching of the power of the cross...you could not truly "repent" ...no Faith by hearing the Word of God in our hearts....no Gifts of the Spirit, no Fruits either...just dead religion, and still under the law...no Grace...no Peace on Earth or Good will towards men....no Eternal Blood to forgive sins...but a priest hood stilll....hearding cattle and sheep....yearly sacrifices....what a drag! "Peace!"

No. A person who does not believe in the resurrection is not a Christian because the resurrection is a central part of the gospel.

If Christ did not rise from the dead there is no salvation.

1 Cor 15
12Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

14And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

15Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

16For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

17And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

18Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

19If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

20But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

Anyone can call themselves a Christian. A true Christian is one who follows Jesus and believes what he says.

in case you're touching on Jesus=God, i think all of it rather got here from the Nicean Creed. i've got not got my scriptures with me, yet i understand there are verses that recommend the two procedures. i understand plenty exceedingly plenty say Jesus is God, the daddy and that i are one, and so on. and so on. individually, i do no longer think they're actually the comparable being because of the fact plenty interior the Bible shows separation "The Son of God", chatting with the daddy, and so on. As for what the Apostles have faith... hmm... something suggested interior the Apocrypha?

I cannot judge a person's heart. That's up to God. The idea of a non-physical resurrection is NOT a Christian idea...but - it's not up to me to judge who is a "Christian" and who is not.

Well, the Bible says that if you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, then you will be saved.

I guess that I think that a Christian is someone who can meet those two critereia.
