is there a way i can contact the IRS? i am going to be getting a job at a bank and there is an extensive background check. i can't get in touch with two of the companies because they are shut down.

They IRS would be able to provide info for each year, but not exact dates within the year. If you don't have any records, and can't contact the companies, you probably can't get the info. If you know all the companies and approximate dates, that would probably work.

The IRS would have records of what you made and where you worked but not start and end dates.

Only you (or the companies) have that info.

The IRS doesn't maintain that type of information. You and your former employers are generally the only ones who will have that data.

The Social Security Administration would have this info.
To request this information, you need to obtain Form SSA-7050-F4.
This also includes the fee schedule, from SSA's web site at: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ssa-7050.pdf

call your local social security office, they would have that kind of information or at least be able to tell you how to get it.

Another option, if you've lived and worked in the same city, contact your local city tax dept and ask them - they might have it. (I know in my city they can rattle off all the places and dates I've worked since I moved here two years ago).
