Because the population of this country has grown so have the law enforcement agencies placing more officers in the streets to combat crime that comes with population growth.
Officers have a greater degree of education and training today than before with technology providing more forensic help than before. Therefore more crimes are solved today than before.
Because communities were so much smaller, people knew each other as neighbors and police had fewer places to go in order to solve cases.
There weren't the number of "line of duty" deaths back then as there are today!
There are more lawyers and frivolous lawsuits to contend with today than yesteryear!
I think officers have it better now than before only because the profession is more challenging.

It was not easy then and it is not easy now. Back then there was a lot more gangs, black panthers, people trying to kill cops. Now a lot more rules and regulations to deal with. Still not easy.

Of course! "Back then" to me means a time when everyone respected each other, most of all authority.
