Not too sure prior to 1961 but the suicide act 1961 removed suicide as a crime and ceased to be a crime.

Thought there are still offences in aidding/abetting/assisting the suicide or attempted suicide of another.

People aren't punished for attempting suicide, though they will be taken in to custody and admitted to a hospital. A court can make them go in to some kind of treatment facility after that. So in a sense, they may be "locked up", which some could see as punishment.

They way the suicide attempt is made could cause legal problems though. Illegal weapons, drugs, or use of a vehichle, for instance, could bring an arrest also. But generally, the person attempting suicide is given psychiatric care first and foremost.

Many years ago attempted suicide was a crime until it dawned on someone that most of these people did not really want to die they were just desperate for help in their situation. I think it was sometime in the 1960's that attempt suicide was no longer punished by prison or secure mental institution

I do not think punishment will be the right response to an attempted suicide, as it would mean punishing the person a second time round.

What this person would require would be intensive treatment and counselling - to include psychiatric and psychological interventions .. and a very close watch on this person and his future behavioural patterns

Yes, and if they have, they certainly didn't deserve it. Suffering to the point that someone wants to take their own life isn't punishment enough? That's about the worst thing you could do to someone who is suicidal, give them another thing to be angry at. Attempted suicide should be treated as a desperate cry for help before it's too late and should be taken seriously. Instead, they should be given professional help immediately.

I wouldn't be able to say if anyone has been punished for attempted suicide.

In my experience, we in this country generally pander to these people, giving them everything they request until we can get them to safety. Not something I personally approve of as it wastes thousands in resources and a lot of time that could be better spent elsewhere. These kind of people, generally tend to be the ones crying for help.

A genuine suicide will occur without anyone knowing.

As for a punishment, its not an offence as far as I'm aware to take your own life.

In Scotland you can be arrested for attempted suicide under breach of the peace legislation .You are then under the jurisdiction of the police and required to be accessed by a psychiatrist prior to appearance at court

In the UK suicide is not illegal so you cant be prosecuted for attempting it but it is the onlything you can be prosecuted for aiding and abetting when the act itself is not illegal. The answer to your question is yes many people have been prosecuted in the distant past when it was an offence prior to the Suicde Act 1961..

Depending on how the attempt was done in some cases if the mental health counselors feel you are a danger to yourself or others they will admit you to a rehabilitation center. In other cases they will release you if you promise to be treated as a out patient. In either case you should try to get your life in order.
