A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is an identification number used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the administration of tax laws. It is issued either by the Social Security Administration (SSA) or by the IRS. A Social Security number (SSN) is issued by the SSA whereas all other TINs are issued by the IRS.

It's a number assigned by the federal government to track your information. If you have a social security number, that's it. If you aren't eligible for a social security number, you can apply for something called an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) and use that instead.

For an individual, it's their social security number.
For a sole proprietor, it's the owner's SSN.
For a partnership or a corporation, it's an EIN.
Aliens may not be able to get one of the above, so they apply for an ITIN.
