I intend buying a secondhand car in the UK and leave for a weeks holiday in Europe

Thanks for the reply. The point is if I send the document away can I legally take the car out of the country or can I get some form of proof that I am the owner until the new document is issued in my name?

Dependant on which type of V5 document the vehicle has, there is a section which is held by the new owner,as proof that they are the owner, and the remainder is sent to the DVLA.
This also protects the seller, as he is no longer responsible for the vehicle.
Log onto the DVLA site for full details.

The only time you really need registration documents is when youare selling a car

You should have the reg. document available to show when driving in Europe. Generally you won't need it but big problems if you come to attention of police for any reason and can't show it.
