Master Sergeant is a rank.
E-4 is a pay grade as well as E-5.
None of the three are the same level.

E-4 would be a corporal or specialist
E-5 would be a sergeant

There is no rank called Master Sergeant E-4 or E-5

There is no rank in the US Army like Master Sergeant E4 or E5. It is Master Sergeant E8.
E4 is either Corporal or Specialist. E5 is Sergeant!
Hope this helps!

I have not heard the term "master" used for a sergeant ranked E-4 or E-5. A Master Sergeant is normally an E-8 . This is the second highest enlisted rank, just under a Sergeant Major. Their insignia is 3 stripes pointed upwards and 3 rockers under that with either a star or diamond inside it.

it means he has one more promotion to go! MSG is an E8 and takes a long time to get to. The insignia is 3 chevrons (the pointy arrows) and 3 rockers on the bottom, but NO diamond inside. That is for a First Sergeant, which is an E8 also but one in charge of troops.

E4 is a Specialist and E5 is a Sargent. Master Sargent is E8 and it takes years to get to unless your cousin is a super solider.

e-4 =spc4 e-5= buck sarg. e-8=master sarg. e-9=sarg.mag. e-10= comand sargent major highest enlisted rank. but I think they did away with e-10 so e-9 is the highest now
