Businesses only care about a buck, they could care less if it's 2 degrees outside when they shut your power off. Sometimes if there is a state of emergency due to the cold, they will not shut off anyone until the warning lifts. Soon as those few days are over, it's shut off time again. They will make exceptions if you have medical problems, low income, elderly and/or with children. I would call your local energy company to see if they have a program for you.

Before any utility shuts off the power, it has triued for a few months to collect on the amount owed. Normally, there are some protections if seniors or children live in the house. It also depends on the account holder making a good faith effort to pay on the account. Payment plans are usually available.
Those that whine about the greedy companies are funny. Doesn't anyone have a responsibility topay what they owe any more?

Not sure about your state laws. However usually typical companies will turn off your power at any time, if there is no payment. It is all automatic to them flip the switch is all it takes. Try and go to the office and pay the bill or ask for an extension next time before this happens.

Iowa has a Winter Disconnection Moratorium program in effect, but you must apply for assistance and be qualified for the LIHEAP program in order to avoid disconnection.

I know in Wisconsin they cannot shut it off from like Oct. to April, so I would guess it would be the same in Iowa.
