Yes and no on the sound and yes on running better.
You will hear a louder sound upon acceleration, but not from you mufflers. It is from the sucking of air into the intake. As far as running better, yes you will get a few horsepower out of one, but not a real "seat of the pants" increase. It comes from the higher airflow into the intake. Also gas mileage will slightly increase.

It will help in the performance area due to the fact that it allows more air to the engine. The one thing that you have to do (depending on model year) is remove the baffle in the fender where the air enters the air cleaner box.
This will improve air flow to the air box and the average hp gain is 10 to 15 hp. The growl will come with a better set of mufflers.

I've always used K&Ns in my mustangs. From my 5.0LX to my SVO to my V6. It will increase your airflow and maybe give ya a few more ponies under the hood. But it won't affect the exhaust sound.

Growl..Yes, you will hear the intake deep growl much better, Run better..probably not, If you current air cleaner is clean, I doubt you will really gain much if anything. There is growing data that you engine will injest larger amounts of dirt, leading to shorter life. If the air intake is not receiving cool outside air and not hot underhood air, you will not gain anything and probably lose power due to injestion of hot air.
Good Luck

Nope, not a bit. Next time you hear the sound you want, ask the guy what kind of mufflers he has on it.
