depends on whether your a guest or the married couple .. but 4-5 hours .. bride and groom (well me and mine) got to heck out after 3 hours, it was OUR wedding day and we wanted to "celebrate" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more) our own way

I've seen everything from less than an hour (champagne, cake, photos, goodbye & goodluck) to dance the night away marathons. If your party goes on and on for hours, then you have an obligation to provide plenty of seating and at least one "real meal" -- not just snacks.
I disagree with the previous responant. It's traditional to call a wedding party a reception because it traditionally introduced the bride's parents' social circle and family to the groom -- that is, they 'received' him and gave him recognition. Read your old English novels (or dear Edith Wharton) about the niceties and complexities of being "received" or not received socially. Whether a simple tea or an elaborate ball, a social event for the purpose of recieving some new person can be properly called a reception.

Our reception went from about 6-1am...I think it really depends on how late you are allowed to stay at the venue you book (we got our for 48 hours straight) and if the guests are into dancing and partying.
I've been to a few weddings where the reception lasted about 2 1/2 hours because no one was dancing or anything.

It is a missunderstandig 4 ppl.when they refer 2 wedding reception[concidering every thing as a reception]; in "FACT" the "RECEPTION" takes only 1/2Hr - 1,1/2Hr.depending on how many guessts "U" have & the contract w/the receptio- hall ; "AFTER" the reception "U" have the party & the dinner; then the closing when "U" colect the contributions[$$$] from "U"r guessts ; All toughether between 3 - 6Hrs.depending on the contract & how much did "U" payed the "RESTAURANT"[club; church; cheeper in u'r own home].....::))

I would say 5 hours for a total wedding. 1 hour for ceremony and possibly pictures and 4 hours for eating, dancing, drinking, partying and celebrating.

I think 4 or 5 hours is about long enough, depending on whether you are having music, drinks or whatever. If you aren't then it would probably be more like 2 or 3.

the cocktail hour is 1 hour, followed by a reception that is 4 hours. 5 hours total.
