Dementia is the deterioration of intellectual faculties, such as memory, concentration, and judgment, sometimes accompanied by emotional disturbance and personality changes. Dementia is caused by organic damage to the brain (as in Alzheimer's disease), head trauma, metabolic disorders, or the presence of a tumor.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia.

Most often times people with dementia are unaware that anything is wrong. With Alzheimer's people have lucid moments where they realize something is not right.
This is how my sister-in-laws doctor explained it.
