this 60 year old woman already takes depression medicine. she never cleans the house. before her daughter moved in with her, her house had piles of dirty magot dishes, overflowing trash, full ashtrays, piles of dirty clothes and when she ran out of clean clothes she would just buy new ones.

But when you talk to her she seems normal, but she is still beyond normal messy. like if her daughter doent change her bedroom trash, it over flows and she had an accident in the bed and just put a towl over it for weeks before her daughter changed it (ewww) There is something not right about this and it must be a mental disorder right?

the lady is also a gambler and smoker
she has a full time job and has her daughter, soninlaw and grandson living with her, she seems normal when you talk to her and is only 60 years old. but she is messy beyond normal and doesnt seem to care and she never was like this before, this only happened like 10 ish years ago.

serious answers please!

I can't say a particular diagnosis, but it sounds like she definitely has a serious mental illness.

It's not unusual for people with severe mental illness to lose interest in their surroundings and have extremely messy houses and so on.

I worked in mental health since 1987, and I know of several times where neighbors noticed someone was living in extremely nasty conditions and they called the police or family services. This leads to the person being admitted to the state hospital. I know of people who have been admitted to the hospital, get on meds, go back home, and then it happens all over again and they go back to the state hospital.

No to 1. No to 2. Three is the cure and the charm. There are millions of genetic disorders that are treated every day and people get to lead a normal life, though there is no cure for many. In your case actually you are quite lucky, your underlying problems are anxiety and depression. They are very easliy treatable in your case. You do not even need a psychologist just yet, ask you family physician that you want to try some anti-depressant that will address your depression and anxiety. This will bring immediate relief to you (72 hours) and your urges to tear at yourself will decrease rather drastically. If you cannot even do that for yourself, there is nothing else I can tell you. Just remember it is an illness like any other and must be treated. @Earthquake you are as much a psychology student as "Psychology Mullah" was. LMAO. This time you should call yourself Maximum Exposure. lol

Sounds like she is either a pack rat ( there are people who actually just plain cannot throw things in the garbage) or she has some form of OCD.
I know most people associate OCD with people who are germ phobics, this isn't always true.
Also the depression would make you extremely unmotivated.
Some people would be able to hold down a job but have to let things at home go.
Not really sure, just a guess.

There is definitely something askew with her. It's incredible that she is able to hold down a full time job at this point. Maybe you could talk the daughter into going to a doctor with her. It's really unhealthy to be living like that. Why has her daughter not looked into getting her professional help?? 10 years is a long time to live this way.
