I tried to do it in standby mode and hoped it would charge (a little similar to a mobile phone) overnight, but it seems that i should have left the playstation on. Is this correct?

It won't charge in standby. You can use a usb port on your computer, buy another controller and use one while the other charges, or even buy a charging station (it's not really worth the money).

Leaving your PS3 on all night to charge a controller isn't really worth it. The console pulls a lot of power, so to leave it on to charge a battery isn't the best idea. If you do leave it on, I would at least run Folding@Home so you aren't leaving it on for nothing.

yeah, it needs to be on.
You can charge it through the usb port on your PC too, or charge it while you're playing or leave it on overnight (switch on folding@home and help cure cancer while you're at it) but only if you're happy with your elec. bill!
