I've literally had someone scream in horror. No joke, like I said I was there to kill them or something.

After reading a few of the answers I'm thankful I live in Oz.
Australians really don't give a damn about what religion anyone is born into and may follows at Xmas or Easter at best.
A joke I heard many years ago suggested USians and Aussies were asked if they wanted Xianity or Convicts.
We were very pleased we got the convicts ... they're a lot more rational.
Oh, in response to the question - I don't recall any reactions at all.

Various interesting reactions -- ranging from a simple, "oh, I see" to "wow -- you do know you're going to hell, don't you?" :)
I suppose my favorite was when I told the JW's who came to my door once that I had no interest in taking their little magazines because I was an atheist.
One of them (a woman) said, "oh, there's no such thing as an atheist -- everybody believes in some kind of god." No, I said, I really truly don't believe in any kind of god, and consider it all a bunch of superstitious nonsense. She retorted, "you're just not being honest with yourself -- it's impossible to not believe in god."
At which point I wished them a pleasant day and shut the door.
This poor woman is so deluded she can't even accept that non-belief in god is possible.
Quite sad, actually...:)
Peace.

i assume i could say that I lack thought in any of the gods presented to me. i'm open to the prospect that some deity that people did no longer invent truthfully exists yet I doubt that there is such a component.

LOL- We had a consultant working with us a couple years ago. He asked what I was giving up for lent one time, so I responded with my usual "I'm not Christian."
"Oh so are you Jewish or something?" I couldn't help but laugh.
"I'm not anything- I'm an atheist."
"oh... OH!- You mean... You don't believe in... GOD?!"
"uhh... no."
After proceeding to tell everyone in the room that I was an atheist- with great shame in his voice- he then proceeded to go over the work he had done for the company over the last month... making him look like an even bigger idiot.
He no longer works with us, as nobody really liked him much for many other weird incidents with similar stories attached to them.

I've never had an "over-reaction." However, I once told a Christian aquaintance that I was an atheist, and her response was, "What about Jesus?" I'm not often left speechless, but I truly stared at her in disbelief for quite some time...

I now consider myself an agnostic, but back in my atheists days, I called to volunteer for an organization. They asked me what my religion was, and when I told them I didn't have one, they wouldn't let me volunteer for their organization.
I was also a Religious Scientist for awhile, and some Christians at work, upon hearing that started witnessing to me. I told them to stop & they did.

I never had a "wild" reaction, but several people have instantly informed me that "There is no such thing as an atheist."

My mom actually said
"I don't know how this happened. Nothing bad happened to you in your childhood".
As if one has to experience a traumatic event in order to acquire enough common sense to reject the idea of invisible spirit gods as nonsense.

in my country most people aren't religious fundamentalists, so nearly everyone shrugged and went about their daily business in exactly the same fashion as if I had said nothing at all.
