I have applied for a supermarket job about 10 times now at 5 different supermarkets. I am 18 years old and I am going to a community college. I have volunteer work experience, and the supermarkets say they will hire anyone who is able to work in the US. These supermarkets were hiring when I applied, and I did qualify for the job.

I was wearing a bottoned down shirt and a nice pair of pants when I handed in the applications and my resume. I also made follow-up phone calls after I applied.

I wasn't even called in for an interview.

That's a good question. Supermarkets are usually looking for people, and from your description sounds like you'd have qualified. Did they interview you and not hire you, or did you just never get called even for an interview?

If you didn't get called, sounds like it's something in the way you filled out the application. Fill it out completely, neatly and accurately, and be careful of your spelling.

It's possible you have just been running into bad luck, and they've gotten lots of other qualified applicants also.

Good luck.

Paganmom advice? a no-no! Don't asked them nothing. Don't act desperate like a loser. Next time you apply for a supermarket job try to wear a simple T-shirt. Try to be clean and pleasant. This technique is kind a weird but I promise you it will work, try to look like a poor boy but still clean and pleasant. You know cheap *** pants and t-shirt, don't wear any wrist watch or jewelries. There is an explanation to these but I will not go further. Just try it okay and pick this as the best answer if you get the job. Good luck.

Did you give them very specific hours that you have to work? Stores like their employees to be very flexible usually.
They also may simply have no openings at the moment. Things tend to slow down about in retail after the Holiday season.

If you really want to know why you didn't get the job go in and ask. Try to speak to the person that interviewed you and tell them you are really having problems getting a job and ask if they would be brutally honest with you on why you didn't get the job....hopefully they really will be honest and then you will know why you didn't get it.
