Get the 80GB it's worth the extra.
1. 40GB will not play PS2 games
2. 80GB has 4 USB vs 40GB 2 USB
3. 80GB twice the storage
4. 80GB has card reader not so on 40GB
5. 80GB has a bundle that includes moto storm ($60 value) game and 5 Blue-Ray disk ($150 value) at $499 (at Best Buy I think) and that's a lot of stuff for $100 More than the 40GB model.

They both have HDMI. The 40gb you know doesnt have backwards compatibility and no flash card readers and sd readers so if you dont care about the backward compatibility go with the 40gb. But you cant go wrong with the 80gb. And yes you can connect wirelessly with both.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version. 40GB doesn't support SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc).
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

Both have wireless connectivity and HDMI outputs but the 80gb is more worth it for the extra space, backwards compatability(even if you think you don't need it), flash memory ports and more usb ports.

it's up to you.
if you have ps2 games, then you already have a ps2 to play them.
don't have enough usb ports? add a hub but the controllers are wireless now.
as for the flash cards, you can dump your photos on to a memory stick and attach it to one of the usb ports.
40 gig hhd? no big deal, you could probably upgrade it to a bigger drive and it won't cost you much. sony has intructions on upgrading your hard drive on your own.
but in the end, the wi-fi is what counts, as long as you have wi-fi, you can connect to ALL your media on you computer
but just go with what you can afford. just my 2 cents
you also get 5 free bluray movies with the 40 GB as well

40 GB and 80 GB both have HDMI outputs and can both access the internet.
Although the 80 GB has more space, but you don't need to worry about that if you'll worry about the price..
