not that i'm saying i get alot, but my initial reaction is to tell people that 'oh no, i'm not pretty" or to quickly change the subject. i KNOW that i'm not handling these well, but i've never figured out the right way to take a compliment. i've tried just saying thank you, but it always sounds forced.

Just say thank you and nothing else.
Don't feel the need to explain what you did to your hair or where you got whatever or how much you paid when someone compliments you.
Just say thank you.
Don't even feel obligated to give a return compliment. That's what sounds fake and forced, and therefore, not genuine.

you sound like me. I had the same problem.

when I was young I was told by the other kids that I was ugly. I never went out with any of the pretty girls in school so I figured they were right. Then I guess I grew out of it when I got older and had some women tell me I was the most handsome man they had ever dated. Well, I thought they were lieing and were after someting more than a ring. I called them "liar" and laughed it off with a smile.

Then it kept happening, the compliments, and so I changed my remarks to a simple "thank you" and let it go at that.

Then I realized that I should compliment back so try to find something to stroke their ego about too. Say something like "you too" or "you look good too" or "you have the prettiest eyes" you know, something to even the score.

good luck

IM me if you want to chat about it.

These steps should help:

1. Sit or stand up straight. Do not shrink back and act timid. This makes you seem like you either don't like them, or you aren't confident, or you don't believe them.
2. Smile when taking a compliment. A compliment is intended to make you feel good. If you frown, look at the ground, or look away, the other person will be confused or uncomfortable. Smiling will make both of you feel good.
3. Thank them. This is one of the best ways to reply in return to a compliment. Very simple, and very easy.
4. Remember to accept the compliment without trying to take the subject off yourself or feeling like you have to pay them back. This will make you feel more confident and let you grow to like yourself better.

I used to catch so much flack from my guy friends when it came to this. On the rare occasion that I'd dress nice, if they complimented me I'd give them this "eat crap" look and tell them to shove it. Over the years, and with them telling me I act like a certain provacative word, I've finally realized that when people comliment me that I should return the gesture. Now, if some one says "Oh, I love your earrings!" I say "Thank you so much! I got them at [store] and when I saw them I just HAD to have them! You'd love that place!". I may take it too far, but I try to be nice about it.

Say, Thank you. If you seem ungrateful about a compliment, someone may take it as sarcasm, or conceit.

Also learn to compliment yourself more, in the mirror, at home, it seems as though you're a little shy.

Most people are like that. I actually think thats better than bragging non-stop after a compliment.

I think you dont believe you deserve a compliment. Otherwise you would cherish those moments and yes, say thanks very much. If someone says you are pretty, you just are in their eyes.

Well, it is forced to simply say "thank you" when you don't feel comfortable with the compliment. But it's much more graceful than any alternative, so just try and be sincere in thanking them for their attention, even if you don't agree with their assessment.

Say something like "Thank you," smile a bit shyly, look down for a moment as though you're embarrassed. Then meet the person's eyes again, and add "You are very kind."

But I think you are pretty, so don't worry so much!

Happy New Year!

Always remember that compliments are praise for you and to make you feel good. A simple Thank Q, is always the proper response.
