The name is High German. Although it is spread over the country, it's rare, and obviously of Swabian origin.

It can be found only twentyfour times in all the telephone directories of the country. So the computer says there will be about 64 living persons with the name Hutfless in Germany.

Realize that without a doubt I am making this up. But it sounds good - maybe - at least to me.
But assuming it is of germanic origin, well, the component split would be hut - fless. Hut is easy - means "hat". But "fless"? Lacking any better reasoning, I thought maybe it was a variant of "fleiss" which is diligent.
So Hat Diligent?? Or maybe someone who ALWAYS wore a hat - maybe as a result of their status, occupation or just their personal preference.
Hey, for making it up, sure sounds good.
