For driving on different sides of the road. In each case it is to enable the driver to sit as near to the middle of the road. In Britian (and most former empire countries - eg India) driving is on the left hand side of the road (so we have right hand drives) this relates to how jousting on horseback was carried out - most people being right handed when carrying a lance or sword. In other countries with less war like tendencies they just like to be different - but it probably dates back to the needs of horsemanship of the period when driving teams. Navigation on canals in the Uk generally follow the same pattern as the roads.

I hate to state the obvious but...... with a left hand drive the steering wheel is on the left and with a right hand drive the steering wheel is on the............ go on, guess!
Why is this question in pain and pain management........... oh I get it now, it's a painfully stupid question.........

RHD - steering wheel on driver's side of car; LHD steering wheel on passenger's side - I think that's it.....
