Why would the dead need respect? They're DEAD!

You should never speak ill of someone who can't defend themselves.

I wouldn't think it would be the dead people you're trying not to offend, but their friends, family members, etc. It's just a respect issue.

Ex: My cousin died of a drunk driving accident. If someone spoke badly about him, things could probably get ugly a lot faster, simply because he's passed on already, and especially since my family and I are still hurting from the loss.

Peace,
Drew

There are some cultures where speaking of the dead at all is believed unwise, especially saying the dead person's name. I don't know why, but i believe the idea crept into our society from these other sources.

I would not speak ill of the dead. But then, i would not speak ill of the living, either, when in my right mind.

You're not supposed to speak ill of the dead or the living! 'K. I'll tell you why. It's because of respect. OK? OK.

I believe in Proverbs of King Solomon. If not mistaken it reads: Let the dead rest in peace, they already paid for Their sins." Remember that in those times the punishment for sins was death

just common respect, when people began to emphasise with others ill imagine. as people who have died may have given much more than yourself, death has alaways been a sad event, maybe from that, or from a famous ancient person dying like the pharohs etc. or an ancient law regarding the pharohs.

I think has something to do with being a kind person. I guess if you are used to talking "ill" of people while they are alive- this saying would have little to do with you.

I believe it is just out of respect. Perhaps long ago people thought that the dead would haunt them if they spoke bad about them...but thats just a guess.
