Why would any straight guy get a dog that fits in your coat pocket? I can't seem to fathom this.

Because if they don't have a baby, a tiny WUSSY dog is a CHICK MAGNET.
ha ha ha! My husband REFUSED to get a tiny "WUSSY" dog.
We have BOXERS and Bullmastiffs.

The fact that you ask this question tells me you have a dog for all the wrong reasons. the dog is a companion not a measure of who you are. I suppose you drive a big pickup as well, because that's what guys drive.
i am a guy and i own a pug...why? because i live in a townhouse, and work long hours, a big dog would not fit my lifestyle. It would not be fair to the dog. If you have the time to let the dog be what he was bread to be and train it to be well behaved, then cudos, if not, then i think you are being unfair, not just to the dog, but everyone that is exposed to your untrained pet.

Because that person is being responsible and choosing a breed that fits his lifestyle.
I know a police officer (big, buff guy, definatley not someone that looks like you want to tangle with in a dark alley) that runs papillons in agility. They fit his lifestyle and are excellent agility dogs. (And he is confidient enough in his masculinity to be comfortable having a small fluffy dogs.)
Just because a dog is small doesn't mean it's wussy. My papillon is about the size of a cat, yet she's quite the tomboy!

The best explanation I got was from a US Customs officer. It goes something like this: He just needs a dog to bark and tell him that someone is in the house, and the gun will take care of the rest.

If you ever owned one of those small dogs, you'd see they really are not wussy dogs. I got two Doxies with my girlfriend, becasue thats what she wanted. I really was against owning a small dog, but those little suckers are tough! I've watched them attack my neighbor's pit bull. they steal his bone, and bite him on the face when he tries to get it back. They are tough little suckers, and definetly not wussies
So whats the deal with people giving thumbs down? How is an opinion considered bad advice?

There's a dog for every dog lover. Big, small, whatever. Why do *you* care if someone has a dog that wouldn't suit you? What business is it of yours? So long as it's not messing on your lawn, you've got no stake in what someone else chooses for a companion.
Come to think of it, if it *is* messing on your lawn, I'd think you'd prefer a small dog doing that, than a large one! Heh!

In a way, your question is sexist. And I definitly agree with the first answer. I don't always like those people that carry their toy dogs around in purses but as long as they're taking care of it properly I don't see a reason for them not to.

he might be lonley and there so darn cute.you can take them every where but if I had a yard a house I would get a big dog I like it when your dog takes you for a walk it actually makes you work out or play freeze bee with it

Why would a dude get a big dog? Because he's a puss. He has to have a dog to protect him cuz he's scared. Where as if he had a small dog he would have to protect the dog. So straight guys get small dogs so they can care for them and protect them. That is why my boyfriend got me a maltese, So he can protect both my puppy and I.
