We are getting married in May, my parents said its okay to ask for an HDTV on our registry, but I think that is too expensive. However, she stated people ask for China, and that is expensive. I already have my mothers’ china, so we will not have anything else that is outrageously expensive. We will be registering at Sears, as it is a common store. In light of the fact HDTV’s will be the only source of television come March of 2009, unless you want to buy a converter, which costs almost as much as a new TV. Is a new TV appropriate?

Personally I wouldn't want people to think I was weird, however, i've seen it done and I'll tell you why. Target, for example, will send you a coupon for 10 % (I think its only 10 but still) for an item that didn't get bought on your registry.
Then they take that and get the TV... I've seen people do that and spread word of mouth not to purcahse the TV. I don't know how tacky this is...
But I kind of wouldn't mind a big ticket item, we're not getting china.....we don't have a place to put it and probably wont use it....
EDIT: I have a kitchen aid mixer on my registry, i'd love one of those....and i figure if one person doesn't want to put the money out for that, maybe my bridesmaids will go in together and get it....or maybe my parents or whatever.. :)
EDIT #2
Who says you NEED china? I dont need it..please....thats just a show thing..its not a necessity.. (this is directed to those saying registries are not for entertainment purposes...you know what, fine china is used for entertaining people!
ha!

I wouldn't dream of putting that on my registry. Is your mom a bit off her rocker to compare an HDTV with the price of china? It's not like you can buy individual pieces of a tv to give the couple!

sure, china is expensive--but a $60 plate vs a $1500 TV? i think it's a little much! but sometimes groups of friends go together to purchase one big gift so maybe they'll get you an HDTV

Just because you register for gifts does not mean that you are going to receive them. Sorry to inform you but the converter's will not cost as much as a new TV.

I personally think that is too much to ask for, but you never know, maybe people will want to go in on the big gift together. More importantly, many retailers offer a discount to people who establish registries with them but don't have everything purchased for them on their wedding date. So check with Sears, perhaps you can put it on your registry and buy it yourself with the money you get at a 10% or more discount.

The registry is meant to be used for items that you need to set up your new house together. No one needs a TV- don't do it, you will offend a lot of people.

This new trend really annoys me. I don't think I've ever seen anything tackier than couples asking for things for their entertainment on their wedding registries.
The whole point of the registry is to point out what you'll NEED for your home once you're married. This should include kitchenware and toiletries. Not TVs and Xboxes.

I agree with Peachy Keen Jelly Bean. Putting a TV (HD or not) on your registry is tacky.

If you put it on your registry and you dont recieve it, many stores will then send you a coupon for 10% off that item if you decide to purchase it on your own. Good luck!
