I was just trying to see if these glasses would really be helpful or it is just some people trying to drum up some biz. I looked up these glasses on the net, (there are alot of companies selling these glasses) so I want to find out more before I try to buy or do anything.

I work as an RN for eye doctors. When we check a patients vision we check one eye at a time first then we use pinholes to see if the eye can be corrected. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it does, it's a good indicator that someone's vision can be corrected with glasses and is therefore a refractive issue. Even some of our patients with macular degeneration or other diseases can be pinholed to a better visual acuity but we still don't offer them pinhole glasses as a means to treat them! What the pinholes do is narrow the field of vision so that objects/words etc appear bolder or with more contrast. I wouldn't however, recommend buying 'pinhole glasses' and Im fairly sure none of the doctors I work for would either! :)

The effect of looking through a small orifice actually does help focus the image, it has to do with the physics of how light rays pass through small holes. You can try it by taking a piece of thin cardboard, like the stuff from cerial boxes, and poke a nice round hole in it with a needle. Hold the cardboard close to one eye and look through the hole at something that is far enough away that you are not quite able read it and notice the difference. You will find that the smaller the hole is the more "in focus" the image, but less and less light gets through to your eye, so there is a trade off. Note: if your vision is really bad, the focusing effect might not be large enough to help; it works for me, and I wear glasses that are about -3D.The pinhole glasses I've seen usually have a pattern of many holes, but I would think they would be very inconvienient and not work very well unless it is quite brightly lit, as they don't let a lot of light through. I think there might be issues with field of view as well. Since most vision problems requiring glasses are because the eyeball or cornea are wrong shape, and wearing glasses, of any kind, isn't going to change the shape of your eyes, I don't think wearing them is going to improve your vision, but they won't make it any worse than it would normally get on it's own either. I would suggest you just get the regular kind of glasses.

Looking through a pinhole can and will help your visual acuity if your problem is refractive and not caused by disease. However, you will have literally no peripheral vision and everything will be much dimmer.

There is absolutely no proof that wearing pinhole glasses will improve your vision over time and if I had to guess, I think it would probably hurt your overall vision rather than help it to wear pinhole glasses over a prolonged period of time.
