Hug? No reason to be afraid.
Kiss? There is a very small possibility that HIV/AIDS can be transmitted through saliva and/or open lesions in the mouth area. And who wants to risk their life for a kiss?
Honestly though, I believe the fear is because AIDS is deadly. So people want to minimize their risks of coming in contact with anyone infected with HIV or AIDS.

Because of fear. I consider myself pretty rational and I would still be reluctant to come into close contact with people infected with HIV. Besides, HIV / AIDS breaks down your immune system so people with it can carry OTHER diseases that *might* be highly contagious compared to just HIV / AIDS. It's why AIDS patients have so many infections everywhere.

Irrational fear due to lack of knowledge...
If "AIDS" were able to be spread that way...
We'd ALL have it by now...
(As insidious and as horrible as AIDS is...it's number one drawback is...(and thank our lucky stars for this fact...)
...it can't be spread by a hug or a peck on the lips...
(The virus can only exist in a "enclosed blood hemoglobin" environment...direct "hemoglobin blood product" (semen, vaginal lubricant, intraveinous needles, etc...blood substance to blood substance...and semen is a "hemoglobin" product...as is any "inner created" substance that can be transferred...but "saliva" is not a conveyance...unless the person has bleeding of the gums in his or her saliva...so...
Hugs and non-bloody lip kisses do not ever transfer the virus...
I know that because I am well-read and educated...
People who are NOT well-read and educated fear everything...

Because they do not know enough about the disease and have only heard myths about it. They are afraid they will catch it by hugging or kissing.

I think they are afraid that they may try to catch it by contact. It's only possible to spread HIV through sex, blood contact, needles, etc. Hugs and kisses are not on the list.

Sterotypes left over from the 80's. My friend is HIV+ and he doesn't like to kiss other people on the mouth, just to be safe....
