He has been sick with a "flu like illness" according to the doctor. Yesterday when he woke up he was dry - and stayed that way till about 1pm despite drinking. he took a really long nap and was still dry and is dry again this morning. he does use the potty but usually tells me to come with him. He is acting fine, just like normal but this urine thing is really bothering me.
i am a nurse - not a peds nurse though- and i may be getting ahead of myself with this- i dont want to take him to the er only to wait for 5 hrs just to have him pee right before the doctor comes in but on the other hand i dont want him to be in kidney failure either.

At the very least have him seen by his ped. Since your a nurse Im sure you know the signs of dehydration....no tears when crying, you can push on his big toe or first finger, if it pops from white to pink right away hes good...if there is a delay of more than a second or two he is not ok, and you should really thinkabout having him in the ER. you said he uses the potty.....but did not say if he went, even a little. If he did pee on the potty, and if it was dark in color, yet another red flag. Good luck!

Your main concern is getting fluid into him and seeing if they come out the other end. Don't worry about it being "healthy" fluids at this point - just something he'll get down. Sprite, 7-up, and Ginger Ale or any other favorite fizzy drink without caffiene will usually go down pretty quick. As will popsicles and jello. If you can get him to drink a cup of fluid, eat a popsicle and a bowl of jello, then drink another cup of fluid and he doesn't produce any urine within an hour or two, you should call your pediatrician. You said he seems fine otherwise so I wouldn't worry about kidney failure at this point - he'd be a whole hell of a lot less fine if his organs were failing.

Call the doctor, or go to the ER. I know waiting for hours is a long tedious business, but better safe than sorry. If your son has been dry that long then something is wrong, and it needs to be taken care of quickly

I would call your peds and let them know your concern. He may just be fighting off the bug and the waste is coming out in sweat. That way you don't need to worry about sitting in an ER for 5 + hours unless it's necessary.

call his doctor and tell him whats going on. another thing you can do is put a new pamper check at what time you put it on and give him some water and juice to see if he is going and when you take it of check how long did he have the same paper on. but the best is too call the doctor they may help you better.

Rule of thumb is if they haven't peed in 24 hrs and you haven't been able to achieve it through drinking, they need an iv.
