As cheap as possible? How does Christmas Island sound? It's in the Indian Ocean south of Sumatra. You can have an indefinite stay there free of charge. All you need to do is attempt to land in northern Australia by boat from Indonesia. We used to send people to Nauru in the Pacific as well but that's been closed so it's Christmas Island for everyone.

Seriously there are many island resorts through the South Pacific, around Australia and into the Indian Ocean and there would be jobs going on many of them. If you want volunteer work, you should join one of the large aid organisations.

Many islands on the Barrier Reef hire seasonal staff. Look through hospitality adverts on www.seek.com.au. Not quite desert or deserted though.
For voluntary work try www.australianvolunteers.com/ or Red Cross websites.
Good luck, don't forget the sunscreen!
