The procedure is taking so long, that now, after 3 months, my time is running out. I am considering just going and lying about my record... Or will I be earmarked now in the Customs computer as 'someone with a criminal record, visa-application in progress..' ??

It would help to give you a better answer if you told us what sort of visa you are applying for. Why is time "running out" for you? However, if you have already told the US embassy that you have some sort of criminal record, there's no point in saying something else now and it could very well end in making you permently ineligible for any visa for misrepresentation and fraud for trying to hide your past criminal record. Your application is part of the electronic record and available to anyone wherever you apply, as are your fingerprints and photo, which is why we like computers so much. Your visa application in progress is also part of the record for the same reason.

The chance is the you will not be allowed in, and the moment they are going through all the records about you and in a few weeks or months you will be informed

Denied a visa or entry at ports and borders, if you have a criminal record in any country, or criminal charges pending outside the U.S.;

You'll probably be denied a visa, as the U.S. takes criminal records very seriously.

You'll be marked. Honesty is the best - if you lied they'd only find out and lock you up as a terrorist anyway
