How can anyone claim that Islam is a religion of peace when anyone who tries to bring the Islamic world into modernity is assassinated? We've seen it in Lebanon all too frequently and now Benazir Bhutto is assassinated in Pakistan,

Well, I think it is clear that there is more than one interpretation of what is the "true" Islam. You have big proportions of Muslims in every country that would love their country (and maybe the world) to look more like Iran, and you also have big proportions who would like their country to be more secular and modern. The exact proportions depend on the country.

Those things go hand in hand with political attitudes. In a country as radical as Pakistan you had a significant proportion of the population supporting a female leader who advocated democracy and secularism--yet, there are also many (too many in fact) who believe Islam is about getting rid of anyone who would not enforce Shariah law Iran-style. They believe democracy, modernity and freedom are a betrayal of Islamic culture and religion--and that killing anyone who advocates these values is the holiest thing to do in Islam.

So to answer your question: Islam is not a religion of peace when understood from the Wahabist/Iran paradigm and their millions of followers all over the world (no, I don't think they're a tiny minority....in some countries you have 30-40% of the population wishing their country looked more like Iran).

BUT Islam IS a religion of peace for the millions of moderate Muslims who are open to modernity and democracy, and who believe being a good Muslim does not involve politics or military action and never condones the murder of civilians. Unfortunately, we rarely hear their voices because the Western media ignores them; the dictators and terrorists in their countries threaten them; and many live silent lives integrated in Western societies and not making a fuss about being Muslim, but instead are looking for the common humanity in others, regardless of culture or religion.

I also want to add that I regret deeply the loss of Bhutto, who gave a rare example of the educated modern brave Muslim women that you'll find in every Muslim country, but whose voices are too often silenced or brutally repressed. We need more education and freedom of choice for new female Muslim leaders to arise and bring about the Muslim societies that are needed in the XX!st century. Let's hope Bhutto's life and sacrifice will inspire many Muslim women to develop and show their talent and strive to be free and not let men step on their heads. I'll be the first to support any and all such efforts.

ISLAM IS A RELIGION OF PEACE. Benazir Bhutto was a good Muslim and she never tried to bring the Islamic world into modernity. Why should you blame Islam for such happening in the world?

Islam does not call for the assassinations of anyone. Islam has nothing to do with it. Pakistan is an Islamic country. The majority of its population are Muslim. You wouldn't expect an Atheist to assassinate her. It would most likely be a Muslim. But his religion did not cause him to do that. It's political. People must learn how to be intelligent in their thinking process. Logical explanations are clear to all. Those who wish to translate events without logic will find their reasonings are totally not statistically correct.

For those who have not visited Lebanon, It IS the most modern country in the Middle East.

It is well and widely known all over the world that George Bush is a professional liar. Bhutto statement and the fact that there are no more Bin Laden videos only audios proves that Osama is dead. Our government lie to us and keep us in the dark.

This is politics. Some people do not wish to work within the system. Consider all the assassinated politicians in the US, Lincoln, McKinley, the Kennedy's. Think of the near misses, both Roosevelt's, Truman, Reagan. This is very sad news about Bhutto. She seemed to be a very enlightened person.

You cannot blame religion for this, we have many murders in North America everyday but we don't blame the religion. The people are bad not religion, please read what Islam is about not the people who are born with it.

mzJakes, lebanon is NOT a muslim country, it is a country with a
mixture of religions. Furthermore, you are alledging that the people who assasinated in lebanon were muslims, do you have evidence for this?
Second of all, the assasination is not called for in the religion.
Those people who killed her God will be bring to account.

Thank god that as muslims, we believe that justice will prevail ultimately and that every human or animal that has been wronged will ultimately recieve his justice.
I cannot say the same for athiests, who do not believe they will receive justice for the wrong that they have received. That I consider sad.
My question to you is, if the killing was not done by a muslim, would you have made such an accusatory statement?

Did president JFK and lincoln not get assasinated?

This is about politics and power and not religion.
