A condom is an artificial form of birth control.

The Catholic Church allows only natural forms of birth control.

Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).
3. Married couples should welcome God's gift of children and, therefore, artificial birth control is against the will of God.

With love in Christ.

A condom is a barrier between a husband and wife during the one particular act that is supposed to be completely unifying in all senses of the word. The condom is an actual of rejection of each other's healthy fertility when the marital act is supposed to be 100% unifying and accepting of each other.

Healthbuff above is wrong on several accounts. If one takes a literal interpretation of Catholicism, there is NO chance of sexually transmitted disease because the people in question would stay virgins until marriage, marry virgins and then remain utterly faithful in that marriage.

The accusations of "mental anguish" and "self-loathing" are nonsensical -- I've never been happy since I became Catholic, because the Catholic faith promotes the diginity of all people, no matter what gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, etc.

As for not being "able to follow the doctrines to the letter," that's totally missing the point. We have a "gold standard" set before us, and we have a LOT of help in our attempts to reach that gold standard, but there is no mental anguish. Catholicism is a journey and everybody is at different points on that journey, and that's okay.

As for the Pope "doing nothing" -- he didn't exactly do nothing. He instructed the bishops, who were the priests' immediate supervisors, to handle it. When the issue started in the 1950s and 1960s, the bishops consulted leading psychologists and it was the shrinks who said to move the priests "away from temptation," so that's what they did. The shrinks were wrong and everybody knows it now, but nobody knew it then. And then the situation got more complex and it's been difficult to unravel, but a lot of very good progress has been made. If you go to the USCCB web site, you can read about that at length.

I, too, have been frustrated with some of the bishop's inability to clamp down properly -- mine has been GREAT and has made it clear that the slightest hint of abuse will result in immediate removal of all contact with parishioners and being handed over to the civil authorities for investigation. You seem to have a myopic view -- if you were actually interested in finding out the facts, you might not have such a negative view of the Church's handling on this issue.

Your "do as I say, not as I do" claim is completely unfounded. I note you provide no evidence for it\.

Likewise, your claim about the Church fostering hatred, prejudice and bigotry is unfounded. The Church is the antithesis of this, operating in more nations than any other religious institution and doing more to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, etc. than any other institution.

I agree that people need to be responsible in planning their families, but I do NOT agree that condoms are a responsible way to do it. Not only because of the fact that they are barriers at a time when there should be no barriers, but because they fail and they are completely unnecessary. If you understood female anatomy, you'd know what I meant by that.

Also, don't be so quick to offer birth control pills. They shorten a woman's life, leading to cardiovascular diseases, liver cancer, deadly blood clots and other FATAL conditions. Why should the WOMAN take all the risk in a relationship? Isn't her life valuable enough that she shouldn't incur ALL the risk? This is another case where the Catholic Church is protecting the dignity of women while society shows its hatred toward females!

And finally, my priest is always "there" for me when I need him.

I pity anyone who takes the Catholic faith literally. A literal interpretation of the Catholic faith can set people up for sexually transmitted diseases, mental anguish, self-loathing, etc. No one who takes the faith literally can be mentally healthy because no one can follow the doctrines to the letter.

Here is some irony for you. The Pope did nothing to the priests who were found guilty of sexually molesting alter boys. The only consequence was being moved to another church! How's THAT for leading by example!!! Even the Pope and his Cardinals have a "do as I say, not as I do" mentality. Total hypocrasy.

The Catholic faith still considers homosexuality to be an abomination!!! How's THAT for unadulterated nonsense!!!

The church is responsible for more hatred, prejudice and bigotry than any other institution!!!

Do the right thing. Participate in responsible family planning! Use condoms. Use birth contol pills. Make sure you have children ONLY when the time is right for YOU, not for some priest who will never be there for you when you need help raising your child!!!

The church has stupid.rules. (sorry if I offend anyone here). I tell catholics well is the church going to support your children? Are they going to pay for clothes, food and an education? If your church is not going to help raise your children then what right do they have in telling you not to use condoms? If you can't afford to have children then use a condom and don't listen to pope !!!

Sex is for procreation , not recreation (meaning fun).
Lets see the thumbs down for those few words of wisdom!
Just as a little point of interest the Catholic church does allow some form of contraception under special circumstances.
