I have bought a hd tv recently samsung 19 inch hd ready and I want to connect a freeview box to it, so I was wondering whether I should buy one that has HDMI socket as well as SCART or will one with just a SCART socket do?

Typically no. It really all depends on what connections your HDTV accepts and what the set-top box outputs at. Most HDTV sets have HDMI, Component, and probably one place for a composite connection.

You can use the typical composite cable (red, white, yellow) to attach the HDTV and set-top box, however, that won't produce an HD picture.

To get the picture on your TV in hi-def you need, at least, component cables. HDMI cables are suppose to be the best to use for HDTV.

But it all really comes down to what connections both your TV and set-top box has.

If your set-top box has an HDMI output then it is preferable, but not strictly necessary.

If you haven't bought the freeview box yet, I wouldn't bother looking for one with HDMI unless it's an HD box.

Just connect with a decent quality SCART, it'll be fine.

Only if it is a HDTV source. Otherwise SCART is adequate,
