what exactly is speaking in tounges? i think i know the jist of what it is, but never hearing it before, i honestly dont know.
my boyfreind says that i should have heard it because he has done it at church standing right next to me (he does it if he doesnt know the words to the song or what to pray) but i was worshiping the lord and blocked out everyone around me. he said he was at this one church and they had this lady who spoke in tounges and there was an interperter. how come some people can understand what the person speaking in tounges is saying and others cant? I asked a question about praying http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AlJuA416OYAPEdbd_sNko4nsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071226211828AAW6ShT and someone said if i dont know the words to pray, then to speak in toungs, but i dont know how. i dont know what it sounds like because as i said earlier i have never heard it before.

Yes, speaking in tongues is a gift from the Lord and it's the baptism of the Holy Spirit on to us.
Sometimes when people do not know what to pray, they will speak in tongues and they really do not know what they're saying but the Lord knows for it is He who directs them when they speak in tongues. When we speak in tongues, it is a different language or rather one that we have never used before.
A person who speaks in tongues does not mean he is a better Christian than those who do not speak in tongues. There are some people who are gifted by the Lord to interpret what another person is saying in tongues. These are all gifts of the Holy Spirit.
If you want to know more, talk to your pastor and ask him about it.
'While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”'

Speaking in tongues is one of the 7 spiritual gifts you may recieve from God. Not everyone gets spiritual gifts and some people may get only one gift while another person gets more than one. If you do not have the gift of tongues you can't speak in them. Also some are not given the gift of tongues but are given the gift of interpretation of tongues. To understand it better read : 1st Corinthians chapter 12. Start at verse 1 but the spiritual gifts are explained in verses 8-10. You will hear about speaking in tongues in a penticostal church and some Methodist churches teach about them.
Most churches kind of skip over the tongues because a lot of ministers were not taught about them. Joyce Meyers is a good minister to listen to on TV. She speaks of tongues. If you get a chance watch her program if you get it where you live.

When the Bible says that the disciples received the gift of tongues from the Holy Spirit, it means that they gained the ability to speak and have all understand them in their own language. This, however, obviously never happened. It would have been completely unnecessary. As Alexander the Great had recently conquered almost all of the known world and spread Hellenistic culture to all of it, Greek was a very common language. It was one of the official languages of the Roman Empire, along with Latin. Latin, however, was only used for ceremonial purposes. Greek was the language that was used at marketplaces, courts, in speaking to soldiers, and addressing the public. Jesus would have spoken it, his disciples would have spoken it, and it would have most certainly been the language Jesus taught in. The very name "Jesus" is Greek. Actually, the only people who wouldn't have spoken it was the occasional farmer who had never been to a town or city. All preaching was done in large towns and cities. As none of the disciples ever left the Roman Empire, there would have been no reason for them to ever have to know a language other than Greek to teach. Speaking in tongues would have been completely unnecessary.

Acts 10:46
For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.
1 Corinthians 12:10
to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
1 Corinthians 12:28
And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:39
Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
Speaking in tongues is a gift from God. It is a language that the devil cannot understand. It was good that there was an interpreter present.
1 Corinthians 14:28
If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.
Don't feel bad because you cannot speak in tongues. I cannot either. However, I don't let that mess with my faith in God. -Keep the faith. -God Bless.

speaking in tongues is different from babbling. speaking in tongues is the same thing as speaking another language. speaking in tongues is actually speaking a language that know one has taught you but God gave it to you as a gift. read the book of acts during the day of Pentecost. when the disciples spoke in tongues the people on the outside said they heard them speaking in there own tongue. so speaking in tongues is something you learn but is a sign or gift that God just gives you. its a sign for unbelievers. like it was on the day of Pentecost.

I've witnessed people speak in tongues. It's nothing more than shouting out a bunch of unrecognizable jibberish. If someone was seen doing this in public, there's a good chance the cops would take them to the nearest acute inpatient unit for evaluation.

It is a gift given to a person by the Holy Spirit. God wants you to have it more than you. See book of Acts, it starts talking about it in chapter 2. Just thank the Father for it and start speaking your own prayer language.

and you call yourelf a Jesus freak
DO not speak in tongues unless you are talking in a real language
follow the teaching of the KJV
1 Corinthians 14:28 specifically states to keep your tongue quiet if there are not interpreters to tell the congregation what the blazes you are on about
Think seriously
do you not laugh at their insane floor flopping tongue flapping antics
Many athisests can tell you they are nuts
why can't you see that ?

My Aunt is crazy as a Loon. She can speak in tongues at the drop of a pin. I hit my finger with a hammer and spoke in tongues for about 5 minutes.
