im 21, female, in good health, eat well, etc. but lately i've been feeling very fatigued ( it's relieved by eating something, but the crappy feeling comes back an hour or so later), very bloated, like my metabolism isnt working, and recently a little patch of dark skin appeared in my arm pit...does this sound like insulin resistance or am i crazy? ive been to a gyno (problems with irregular menstruation, put me on the pill...), an endocrinologist and my regular dr. and none of them even mentioned it as a possibility (didnt tell them about the skin thing, didnt think it was related until now)...should i ask for a fasting blood glucose test? what else can i do? i really feel like something is wrong with my body!

They will most likely order a complete blood test including lipids and glucose. If you're worried about insulin resistance, just get a couple of books, learn more about eating better, and get out and have some fun type of daily exercise. Just eating 'well' isn't going to get you where you want to go.

Was that doctor your primary care provider, or an Endocrinologist? You may not need the expensive dietician if something else is wrong, like with your Pancreas, maybe a tumor? I'd get a 2nd opinion from a specialist. EDIT: Cushing's Syndrome can cause the insulin resistance and weight gain. There could be a tumor on your pituatary, or oversecretion of the adrenal glands. Do you take corticosteroids for asthma or other condition?

You need a good checkup that includes testing your glucose level. Sounds like you've seen a few doctors and one of them should have caught it. But you know your body and know that something isn't right and you are the one that is ultimately responsible for your health care. Here we have Med Check Labs and you can go get blood work done for a reasonable amount of $ and without a doctor. I really think everyone should have lab work done on a regular basis and keep track of the results yourself. That way if something is starting to go wrong, you can see the change in a test. But I would go back to my doctor or another one and tell them you are still having problems and insist they check you until you find out just what is wrong. You can buy a tester at WalMart for very little $ and strips and test yourself. Your sugar should be between 80 - 120 before meals and in the morning when you wake up. Your sugar should return to this level within two hours of eating. If it doesn't, you have a problem. If someone had told me this years ago I would have realized my body didn't react like others and I was prediabetic. Now I am full blown diabetic. I also began to feel bad a couple of years ago and after a bad sickness last winter I just didn't have it. Now I find out I have heart problems. I knew there was something wrong but it wasn't bad enough for the doctors to diagnose. How stupid of me but I just thought I was getting older. Listen to your body. . .always and when you feel something isn't right, do whatever you have to to figure out what's going on. The sooner you figure it out the better off you will be. High blood sugar makes you sleepy, tired, lathargic, blurry vision and eating would make the syptoms worse but low blood sugar makes you feel crappy/tired/sick to stomach/blurry vision/shaky/etc. and is relieved by eating but the patch of skin worries me. Get checked. Do whatever you have to do to get a doctor to listen to you.

The dark pigmentation sounds hormonal related. You mentioned irregular periods, this is probably why. With the pill, maybe this will even out, maybe. The fatigue is a symptom of diabetes. Do a search on symptoms of diabetes mellitus type 2 and see if you have other symptoms as well. If you think you have symptoms of diabetes, tell your doctor to do a fasting glucose test, or hemoglobin A1C to check you. Do you have freq urination, blurred vision, increased thirst, increased hunger, nausea, headaches, tremors, irritability, etc? If you do, talk to your doctor.

I think you should also request from your doctor a screening for polycystic ovaries. PCOS as it is referred to are fluid filled sacs (sometimes resembling a string of pearls on or around the ovaries). PCOS can cause all the symptoms you've named (and some others as well, depending on the individual). PCOS can also cause diabetes, the dark patches, that sluggish feeling, male pattern hair growth in some, etc. Research it online. There are many sites that will arm you with the information needed to ask the right questions of your physician. Many Blessings to you and yours.

The best thing to do is ask you doctor for a test. It is a very simple blood test and you would then know the results. If you are insulin resistant and your condition has not yet progressed to actual diabetes, by maintaining the right diet and exercise you can delay and/or prevent yourself from developing diabetes.

I think it would be best for you to ask your doctor to test you to put your mind at ease..

It seems unlikely. It would not hurt to ask. But it seems like an endocrinologist would have picked up on it.

The patch under your arm would have nothing to do with insulin resistance.

Your suggestion about a fasting blood test for glucose level is quite a good one. I'd recommend suggesting that to your physician. Click on the below link for more info on this.

actually if eating relieves this feeling you are actually quite the opposite
see insulin is wat combats sugar which is in food, of course
so u may be hypoglycemic and might want to get a fourth opinion and tell tehm exactly whats happening
