the phone when i called her today. I met her in person before hiring her and she has responded to an email (about 3 weeks ago) after I paid her. she told me to contact her again to make my first appointment for after the first of the year, and I did today, thats when she didnt answer. I have only paid her deposit, which is $200, only 1/3 of the total cost. what can/should i do?

Deep breaths- I did the same thing to my florist and she was on vacation for 2 weeks and it happen with my makeup artist too. Give her a little time to call back and if that doesn't work- got to her house or place of biz for a chit chat.

My first question (and HOPE) is do you have a contract? Did both of you sign an agreement? If you did that is great. Never give money without a signed agreement.
Now I don't know how much you have tried contacting her but keep in mind she is busy - I am sure you are not the only wedding she is working on and with the holidays just behind us give her some slack.
If within a week or so of your failed attemptes to contact her and she doesn't get back leave a message for her saying if I dont' hear from you by this date I will be hiring another photographer and contacting the Better Business Bureau and tell her you expect your deposit back and sent to you by this date.
But give her a chance - your wedding is still far away.

It's a busy time for many people right up until after the new year. did you leave a message? I would try again in a week. do you have a cell number or only a land line number? did you draw up a contract and sign? I have hired someone by means of craigslist and every now and then drop her an email and she is really good about getting back to me (and she is a f/t teacher; busy). This wedding planning is stressin' but as many have said before me...it's Holiday/New Year time. A super busy, getting out of town to visit the relatives kind of time. It'll all work out!

First, I would pursue those other options to see 1) what is their deposit price & 2) if they are available for your date. That way, if you decide to confront her, then you have a back up already in mind....not just the idea of a back up but one firmly in place.
Two, I would call until you get a response - leave as many messages as you like. If she doesn't call you after say 2-3 days, I would leave a final message saying "A wedding photographer has to be responsive to the needs of her client & you haven't been. If I don't hear from you in 1 business day, I will be taking my business elsewhere." When she calls, don't accept ANY of her excuses short of "my father was dying & I had to be by his bedside." You need to be firm with her so she knows her behavior was unacceptable. It's unprofessional & she needs to know it.

If you have a contract with your photographer, you have legal grounds to either get your photos, or get your money back. I would suggest that if your photographer has a store front she works from, that you make a trip there to see her in-person, and find out what's going on. If not, contact her again by email, and let her know that you'd like an update on your pictures, then give her 48 hours to reply. If she doesn't get back to you, email her again, and let her know that unless you get a call back, you are going to report her to the Better Business Bureau, and start proceedings in Small Claims Court to resolve the issue. If she still hasn't contacted you, then do just that - contact a lawyer, and start the paperwork to file against her in court. Then, contact the BBB in your area, and file a complaint against her (while this has to legal effect on her, it does let other potential clients know about your experience).

Definitely keep calling, but your messages should establish a time table, such as "I realize it's the holiday season, and you may be busy or out of town, but I need to know I can count on you. If I don't hear from you by next Monday at 5pm, I'm going to assume you no longer have time for the position and will have to act accordingly."
Good luck!

keep trying to call her... as someone else said... she may be on vacation...
might be a good idea to ask this question of your other suppliers like florists etc to make sure you dont get caught out again...
I would start making enquiries for a backup photographer just in case..
