If you speak against Hi-Point without any experience with one, I would rather not here what you have to say. Please speak only out of first-hand experience, not by word-of-mouth from another...

If everyone's so against Hi-Point, tell me another pistol I can get for under $200.00. My gramps has a Raven .25 Auto. It works fine and for 75.00 Bucks brand new you cant beat it. Give me some more cheap but effective pistols.
(He or I have never experienced a problem with the Raven...)

OK.....it has been said before but i will reitterate the FACT that HI Point pistols are absolute garbage, along with Jennings, Keltec, Davis and most any other gun you can buy for under $200 new.
As for experience with the trash peviously named, i have never owned them, but have shot them all, and they are in fact JUNK.
You should be able to purchase a Makarov at any GUN store, not including ***** or Walmart. They should be about $170. And ammo is fairly inexpensive, about $7-10 per box of 50. The Makarov is chambered in 9x18mm, which is smaller than the 9mm you know and are used to, and you may not shoot anything but the 9x18 in the Makarov.
Regular 9's are 9x19, or 9mm luger, or 9mm NATO. There are other 9mm chamberings such as the 9mm largo and the 9x21 steyr.
You could also find a Star 9mm(like a 2/3 scale 1911 clone)
for under The $200 mark, and I have shot them and they are a decent "cheaper" choice for a hangun .
For your budget the Makarov or the Star would definately be a good idea.
Another good idea would be a Ruger single six or Mark II(III). although chamered in the less powerful .22 lr, they can be effective defense guns, although i dont recommend anything under a .38 or 9mm for that purpose.
Another idea is a Dan Wesson .357, which can be found at gun stores and gun shows for around $175-250. The only reason I like the .357 is the vestatility of allowing the use of .38 as well, for a cheaper plinking or target gun.
The Nagant is a good gun, for target and hunting only, but you must check them well before purchase. The original ammo made for these guns were the older Berdan primed ammo which was very corrosive to ther bores. Always check the bore and chamber of an older military rifle for pitting. If the bore is not shiny, have them run an patch with some solvent down the bore. If the patch comes out clean and the bore is still not shiny DO NOT PURCHASE. If there is any pitting in the bore DO NOT PURCHASE.
A better choice for a rifle is the M/K 48/98 Mauser. They are usually the same price range as the Nagant, but can be found in either 7mm Mauser(7x57) or 8mm(8x57) for which ammo is still widely available, and many of the older Mausers havew been rechambered in many different calibers such as 30-06, .308, and 7mm Rem mag.
I personally feel the Mauser is a higher quality build than the Nagant, and has the ever popular and desirable Mauser action.
Overall, the 9mm is the better starting out gun.
With lower recoil, cheaper rounds, and the capability for target, defense, plinking and hunting. It is the best choice.

The 40 is the better choice here. less recoil than the 45, and has a little more punch than the 9mm. The 9mm will get you more rounds available in the clip and is the cheapest. The 45 is a one-shot -stopper, but is a little more expensive to shoot. I would go with the 40. You will still have almost as much ammo in the clip as the 9mm.

If you like throwing money away, get a hi-point. If you actually like shooting, get the Mosin Nagant.
I own 2 Hi Point carbines, one in 9mm and one in 40sw, I will NOT own or shoot a Hi-point pistol, they are crap.
I won't tell you how many Mosin Nagants I own, every one of them is a great shooter and dependable, something that cannot be said for hi-point pistols.

You might be able to find a makarov for about $200. Those are better pistols than hi-point.

High points are crap. Go with a Smith and Wesson or a Ruger. Get a 40 they are light weight and pack a punch.

You need to seriously reconsider and get a Smith & Wesson or Colt Brand.*
