I am a vegetarian. It isn't because I fight for animal rights, but I just don't like the taste of meat and it nauseates me. I will eat meat occasionally, but my parents don't seem to understand that I detest meat, especially red meat! I need a way to be creative with food I have around my house so I don't go hungry all the time. Any ideas?

Firstly, you aren't vegetarian. Please don't label yourself as one. Vegetarians don't eat meat. Not "just sometimes" or "special occasions"... we don't eat meat. At all.

Secondly, even as omnivores your household should still have lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Those should be the staple of your diet anyway, then if you can get canned beans and instant rice. Animal products should be at the end of the list, no matter what your dietary status.

You are not vegetarian. A vegetarian dont eat meat not for selfish reason. You are not vegetarian, but you are eating vegetarian (not all the time according what you said). This is important to understand that, because many people get confuse about vegetarism, because many people are telling "I'm vegetarian" just because they dont like meat or because for health reasons they dont eat often animals.
My recommandation is to read "Animal Liberation" from P. Singer. If there you find some good reason to become a vegetarian, then it will be more easy for you to explain your familly why you dont eat meat anymore.
If you dont care about animals right (after read this book), and you dont want get hungry all the time, just eat more pasta, bread, vegetables, fruits, etc... You can also buy soy-meat (saussage made with soya), its very tasty and have no blood inside, so its not same as meat, maybe you will like it.
Good luck.

What about eggs? Cheese? Peanut butter? Various beans? All of these have a decent protein content. For a mid-afternoon snack, try bumps on a log. Spread peanut butter into the groove of a celery stalk. Dot it with raisins, and enjoy. For a light lunch you can take with you, make two of these and put the PB sides together, then wrap with plastic cling wrap. Take a cheese sandwich with it, if you like.

Vegetable soups should be good for you. Minestrone has beans in it for protein, but usually no meat. Take extra helpings of whatever non-meat protein is served. Offer to cook for everyone at least once a week. Don't make your mom cater for your likes. Be willing to do the extra work to make sure you're eating properly. If you're not willing to do that, or responsible enough to follow through on it, you need to eat (without complaint) whatever is served.

Have you ever thought that alot of misconception about vegetarian/vegan diet is the unknown? Get a book, read up on recipes & introduce a "veggie" night at home.Be creative....determine what your family likes & dislikes...educate them about the benefits of the veggie way....make it a weekly or biweekly even......being exposed to great veggie dishes might turn the tide of their thinking......and If the want to learn & understand...these night can be fun....and go a long way to educating & maybe even winning over some family members.

Yes, I am a flexitarian vegetarian too ... and I use poultry a lot as well as fish and seafood. I don't like "red" meat although sometimes in the summer I will have a small piece of BBQ ribs.

But I find a lot of flexitarian recipes on the net. Also things like chili I substitute chicken or ground turkey instead of beef.

It should be easy to convince mom and dad that you prefer to cut down on red meat and substitute poultry and fish. It sure is a lot healthier and I think they probably know that already.

Good luck

Get a vegetarian cookbook, and look for recipes on epicurious.com and cookinglight.com, and stock up on good veggie brands like boca burgers and tofuti. You'll never go hungry again. :)

I can understand not liking "red" meat. You might want to look at other "meat" sources ... i.e. "white" meats ... fish, seafood, poultry and consider eating small amounts ... maybe 10-30% of your total diet.

Google "Flexitarian Vegetarian" or "flexitarian diets/recipes" and check out the websites for terrific, simple recipe ideas.
